The high BA would lead me to believe that when a prospect enters the bigs for an audition they focus so much on making contact and putting the ball in play and keeping that BA high, that they may swing down on the ball to do so. Figuring the old adage "the power will come" will save them from ridicule. I take salty's lack of power and high batting average as a greater sign of discipline and understanding what it takes to stick, rather then a worrisome sign that the power will not develop in the majors.

John,

Thanks for the comment. Salty's Dominican League numbers do look like his top prospect stuff. In 20 games he's hitting .364/.506/.848 with nine homers and 21 RBI. If he keeps that stuff up in Spring Training, he'll catapult up the catcher rankings.

However, in July when Salty took over for Laird he hit .295 in 13 games with zero home runs and eight RBI. In August he did hit .355, but he still wasn't hitting home runs and had only two RBI in 8 starts before losing his starting job to Laird and Teagarden.

Salty's numbers need to look more like his DWL stuff instead of his powerless July and August of '08.

I'm not saying he can't do that. I'm just saying until he proves that he can, he's not going too much higher on the fantasy catcher list.

When he was healthy he didn’t show his top prospect stuff of old? He hit over .300 the month Laird was injured. Might change your mind if you were to check Saltalamacchias DWL stats.
