Twitter Poll: Who’s The Riskiest First Round Pick?
Posted by: Knox Bardeen in Draft Strategy, Fantasy BaseballIt’s been my personal belief for a while that your first round pick should be a pick that gives you a lot of bang for your buck, while also minimizing your risk. You’ve all heard the fantasy baseball addage, “you can’t win your fantasy league in the first round, but you can surely lose it”.
I posed the question on twitter yesterday about first round risk. Here are the results:

Who said Holliday was a first round pick?

Chris,
That’s a good point, and I don’t think that he is. That’s why first round is in quotes.

I’m not saying Holliday is a first round pick, but he’s better than Hamilton.
Holliday wasn’t a terrible road hitter he just hit way better at home. Hamilton’s production really dropped off in the second half last year and RBI is the most volatile of all the 5×5 stats. Also, remember that Holliday will be playing for a big pay day. If he proves that he can be productive in Oakland, teams will be lining up to him next year regardless of the economy.

Two things…
#1 - I don’t think either Hamilton or Holliday deserve to be fantasy 1st rounders.
#2 - Very good point on Holliday’s contract year. His offensive numbers should be down in Oakland in ‘09. But, if he finds a way to stay with his career pace (read: over deliver), he’ll receive a Teixeira’ish payout in 2010.
