Wakefield’s injury has saved Smoltz’s job for now, but really this could mean an easy try out for Clay Buchholz. If Buc pitches well while Wakefield is out and Smoltz doesn’t, Smoltz will likely be heading to the bullpen. It’s clear so far that Smoltz can’t pitch deep into games so this would likely make the most sense for the Red Sox.
